Like Sky Glass: Telekom wants its own TV for MagentaTV – TV boxes are discontinued

Sky Glass will probably no longer appear in Germany, but with Telekom and MagentaTV, pay TV, free TV, streaming and TV equipment could soon be available from a single source.

  • Deutsche Telekom is flirting with MagentaTV televisions based on the Sky Glass principle.
  • The network and content provider wants to place its offer at the top of the list.
  • First of all, however, Telekom continues to rely on its set-top boxes – but is already counting them.

Will Deutsche Telekom soon be offering its own TV sets for MagentaTV customers? So far, many TV customers have still been using set-top boxes such as Magenta One or even old receivers for conventional reception. If you believe Telekom’s keynote at the Connected TV World Summit 2023, the provider plans for the future without any boxes and receivers:

The strategy developer Pedro Bandeira spoke there on behalf of Telekom and revealed quite openly that set-top boxes are currently still the method of choice, but sooner or later only a digital UI, i.e. a user interface, on a screen device is envisaged – in other words: smart TVs.

Bandeira emphasized that MagentaTV is by no means reduced to a simple streaming app on other platforms, but rather wants to place its own offers in the center of user attention via the Fire TV user interface, like Amazon does. Amazon already sells Smart TVs with its Fire TV interface in Germany – so additional devices such as Fire TV Sticks are already becoming obsolete there.

Telekom wants to offer TV programs and equipment from a single source

Sky has already shown the way in the area of pay TV: In the United Kingdom, the Comcast subsidiary and Telekom competitor offers everything you need for home entertainment from a single source with Sky Glass and its own pay TV contracts and Internet services. The fact that Sky does not seem to be particularly successful with this offensive on the islands does not seem to slow Telekom down.

Also interesting…

According to the Telekom keynote on the future of MagentaTV, Bandera is launching two possible scenarios – the current TV boxes and receivers do not appear in any of these mental games: On the one hand, you can brand and sell your own TV hardware, on the other hand, cooperation with TV manufacturers is conceivable, on whose devices MagentaTV would then be the UI control center.
