“Lindenstrasse” star Kostas Papanastasiou died at the age of 84. Now his son has announced the cause of death.

As Panaiotis Sarikakis, host of the Greek restaurant “Akropolis”, Kostas Papanastasiou was one of the favorites of the cult series “Lindenstrasse”. The actor died on November 21, 2021 at the age of 84. His son Marc-Alexey Papanastasiou has now in conversation with the “Bild” newspaper announced the cause of death and talked about the last hours of his father.

Kostas Papanastasiou died of kidney failure. Last Friday, the actor was taken to a hospital, the doctors first diagnosed a urinary tract infection. “He just fell asleep on the night of the Sunday of the Dead,” said Marc-Alexey Papanastasiou.

Kostas Papanastasiou suffered from dementia

Marc-Alexey Papanastasiou had already sensed on Saturday that the situation around his father was serious. He drove to him at the hospital to say goodbye. “Still, his death came as a surprise.” The actor has suffered from dementia for two years and most recently lived with his wife in assisted living.

Marc-Alexey Papanastasiou received the news of the death in his Greek restaurant in Berlin, which he had taken over from his father in 2017. As in “Lindenstrasse”, Kostas Papanastasiou worked as a landlord, and musicians also performed in his restaurant. The actor also often sang Greek songs himself.

Family wants to fulfill last wish

During his lifetime Kostas Papanastasiou expressed the wish to be buried in his native Greece. In 1956 he came to West Berlin, where he studied architecture and took acting lessons. His family wants to fulfill his last wish. But on December 10th, a funeral service will take place in his restaurant for the actor, who was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2012 for his social commitment.
