Ex-ski racer Lindsey Vonn mourns the loss of her mother. Lindy Lund has died a year after being diagnosed with ALS.

Lindsey Vonn’s (37) mother, Lindy Lund, died Thursday night, a year after being diagnosed with ALS. That was the former American ski racer on her Instagram account known.

“My dear mother, Lindy, lost her battle with ALS. She passed away peacefully while I held her hand, exactly one year after her diagnosis,” writes Vonn. “I’m so grateful for every moment I had with her, but I’m also grateful that she is no longer suffering and is at peace,” she continues. Her mother was a shining light that will never fade and will always inspire her.

Vonn also lets her followers know that Lindy Lund gave her daughter perspective through all the adversities she faced. “The many hardships in her life have only made her stronger, kinder and more humble. That kind of determination has shaped me since I was a child; whether I knew it then or not, I know it now,” Vonn said.

She closes her post with touching words: “Mom, I hope that one day I will be as strong as you. I hope that I will face every day with as much energy and optimism as you do. I hope that one day I will be mine raise kids as incredible as you do. I love you.”

Ten photos of a life together and a call for donations

The ex-professional athlete also posted ten photos showing her with her mother and other family members. One shows Lindsay as a baby in her mother’s arms, another shows the adult Vonn with mouth and nose protection, lovingly stroking her weakened mother’s cheek.

There is still no cure for ALS, a degenerative disease of the motor nervous system brought to global attention by the Ice Bucket Challenge a few years ago. In honor of her mother’s relentless fighting spirit, Vonn now wants to help raise awareness of this deadly disease. In her post she calls for donations for ALS research.
