After numerous leaks last week, Sony officially unveils the LinkBuds WF-L900, an atypical concept of headphones that allows you to enjoy your music while remaining fully aware of your surroundings.

Would Sony have finally understood that the general public did not understand the extended names of its products? At least that’s what his new pair of true wireless headphones, soberly called LinkBuds, suggests. Joking aside, the innovation brought by these LinkBuds comes mainly from their radically different design from what is currently on the market. Sony’s new headphones adopt a “pierced” button format which is intended to be the least intrusive and isolating possible, in order to remain perfectly aware of its environment.
IPX4 certified, the LinkBuds are advertised as being tiny and very light since Sony promises a 51% smaller footprint than the WF-1000XM4 and a weight of 4.1 g per earpiece. The case also displays almost derisory dimensions with a reduction of 44% compared to the case of the WF-1000XM4.
With such a design, the LinkBuds incorporate an all-new ring-shaped speaker powered by a new amplification stage designed especially for these earphones. This new integrated loudspeaker is however far from working wonders because the open format of the headphones causes numerous acoustic leaks and a consequent collapse of the bass. The LinkBuds also innovate with the way in which commands are executed. Here, you no longer need to aim just with your finger to reach the button or the touch surface of the earpiece, just tap on the area between the ear and the cheek to create vibrations that will trigger an action. Although quite clever, this process is still much more risky than a dedicated button.
Beyond all these new features, the LinkBuds include most of the features already present on the WF-1000XM4. We thus find the same algorithm for removing parasitic noise during calls, the adaptive volume control or the “Talk to chat” function which reduces the volume of the music when the user begins to speak. LinkBuds are also compatible with Fast Pair, Swift Pair and Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice assistants. Autonomy is announced at 5 h 30 min for an additional charge and a charge and a half thanks to the mini-box.
