Linky: defaulters will have to pay €5/month from January 2023


If you do not yet have a Linky meter at home, you will surely not escape the additional cost invoiced by Enedis for 3.8 million refractory households with a connected electricity meter. Indeed, it is from next month that the network manager will start charging for the meter reading… unless you do it yourself.

It has been a year since Enedis and the Energy Regulation Commission have been warning us: French people who still refuse to install a Linky box in their homes to this day will have to go to the cash register in 2023. The amount of the bill, however, seems to have been debated by decision-makers. After having initially ruled for a tariff of 8.30 euros every two months, or 49.80 euros per year, the CRE finally simplified things.

From January 1, 2023, it will therefore be a total of €61 that will have to be paid annually to Enedis, which amounts to a little more than €5/month. As we explained to you previously, it is however possible to avoid this invoice. To do this, simply take your own reading once a year, because it is this operation that is billed by the network manager who will, otherwise, be forced to send a technician to your home. .

Anti-Linky will no longer be able to escape the bill from 2025

However, this respite will be short-lived. Indeed, as Enedis points out to our colleagues from Challenges, this method will only be viable until the end of 2024. In 2025, “it is planned to charge the overall costs generated by the reading of the last old generation meters to the only customers generating these costs”, explains the network manager. Translation: there will be no choice but to pay the additional cost imposed.

Today, there are still 3.8 million old-generation electricity meters in France, or 10% of the total French stock. “The reasons may be linked to contact difficulties, particularly in the context of second homes, technical problems, or customers expressing reluctance to install the meter”according to a spokesperson for Enedis.
