Linky: French people who refuse the installation of the meter will have to pay an additional cost

It will amount to 8.30 euros every two months, or 49.80 euros per year.

Recalcitrants at the Linky counter will have to put their hands in their pockets. In a deliberation made public on Wednesday, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) presented the tariff system adopted for customers opposed to the installation of this communicating electricity meter installed by Enedis. As she had previously hinted, they will have to pay extra to cover the costs”generated by this behavior“.

This additional cost will amount to 8.30 euros every two months, or 49.80 euros per year. It will apply to users not equipped with a Linky meter, and who in addition have not provided Enedis with their consumption index for more than 12 months. The date of entry into force of this provision is set for January 1, 2022. As soon as a Linky meter is installed, this over-billing will end.

This amount may changefrom August 1, 2022“, specifies the CRE. And, from 2025, “all users not equipped with Linky (unless technically impossible)will be subject to this additional cost.

3.8 million French people not equipped

According to the CRE, “Enedis estimates an average additional cost of approximately 26 million euros per year over the period 2022-2024 for the processing of residual reading for approximately 500,000 mute customers“, that is to say “not equipped with a Linky meter, not having allowed access to their meter to Enedis and not having made their consumption indexes available to Enedis for one year“. Costs related in particular tocustomer notifications (emails, SMS, outgoing calls, making appointments, sending “LTE mail”) in order to invite the customer to request the installation of a smart meter and/or produce and transmit a self-read consumption index” or “relating to the attempt to carry out interventions on the user’s premises“.

In total, at the end of 2021, 3.8 million French people, or around 10%, were still not equipped with a Linky meter, which raises fears among some. With a deployment rate of 90.1%, “the objective set for Enedis at the start of the project [90%] was therefore held“, underlines the CRE. The so-called phase ofdiffuse deployment“which opens until 2024”should make it possible to regularize the majority of situations“, she judges.
