The French government, which plans to experiment with temporary limitation of electrical power for 200,000 homes equipped with Linky meterwishes to offer financial compensation of 10 euros, for a few hours of inconvenience.

After a first version of the draft decree was challenged by electricity suppliers, the French government has made some adjustments in recent weeks for its Linky experiment, as indicated RMC. This aims to reduce the electrical power of 200,000 voluntary households, for a few hours, over a day. The chosen households will be compensated up to 10 euros.

A reduction in electrical power reduced to two hours, financial compensation proposed, and the non-obligatory aspect assured

The government is adjusting its Linky experimentation project by offering compensation, but also by reviewing the duration of the test. While the first version of the decree planned to limit power for four hours, the second reduced it to two hours, so that it would be less impactful. Selected Enedis customers will be informed by mail, and may refuse to participate in the experience by letting the supplier know.

The 200,000 homes will be subject to an electricity restriction of 3 kilovolt-amperes, compared to the usual 6 or 9 kVA. This lowered power is supposed to allow the use of essential devices: a fridge, a light bulb, a radiator and a computer. More generally, the experiment aims to assess the impact on electricity consumption and to prevent the risk of overvoltage on the network.

The decree should therefore make it possible to refuse this restriction, and to reward households who accept it, with compensation of 10 euros for the inconvenience, which is perhaps reminiscent of that which would consist of opening a parcel relay at home . But back on topic.

The test day will take place before the end of March, during the day and during peak consumption

The geographical area for the experiment has not yet been determined. The Linky project must now be submitted to the Higher Energy Council. In all cases, the test must take place before March 31, 2024.

In theory, the power drop will take place on a working day (between Monday and Friday inclusive), early in the morning, or late afternoon/early evening. The idea is obviously to carry out this experiment during a consumption peak.

The Ministry of Ecological Transition emphasizes that this experience will make it possible to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the system. If successful, this measure could become a solution to relieve the electricity network in the event of high tension, and thus avoid the risk of blackout. Electricity transmission network (RTE) nevertheless reminded us at the beginning of the month that the risks of outages are much lower this winter 2023-2024 than during the previous one.
