The two groups have announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to study the development in Alsace by the end of the decade of lithium production.
France is investing very seriously in lithium. The mining group Eramet and the energy company Électricité de Strasbourg, a subsidiary of EDF, have just announced a project aimed at producing metal in Alsace. The objective is to consideran annual production of around 10,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate, corresponding to the needs of around 250,000 electric vehicle batteries per year“.
The two groups have been working together since 2020 as part of the European EuGeLi project. This came to an end last December, with the production of “first kilograms of battery-grade lithium carbonate from geothermal waterproduced by the Eramet R&D center. This lithium was contained in water extracted at high temperature and under pressure from geothermal sites operated by Electricité de Strasbourg in Soultz-sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen, in northern Alsace.
