Lithuania said on Monday it was the target of a cyberattack “intensive”against a background of threats brandished by Russia towards this Baltic country which has imposed restrictions on transit to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

According to Jonas Skardinskas, director of the National Cybersecurity Center, the attacks that originated “most likely” of Russia, have already been “mastered”. The attack targeted the sites of public institutions and companies and led in particular to the shutdown of tax services as well as disruptions in the issuance of passports. Secure networks were also targeted, the National Cybersecurity Center said in a statement.
“It is very likely that attacks of a similar or greater intensity will continue in the coming days, particularly in the transport, energy and financial sectors”said Jonas Skardinskas.
The attack claimed by Killnet
The Russian hacker group Killnet claimed responsibility for this so-called DDoS attack, which involves targeting a computer system by flooding it with messages or connection requests in order to cause a denial of service. In a message, the group said it was a reaction to Lithuania’s ban on the transit of certain Russian products to Kaliningrad, a measure taken by Lithuania in early June as part of European sanctions against Moscow. , imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Later on Monday, Lithuanian authorities said the most significant attacks had been “mastered”. According to Mr Skardinskas, there was no serious damage. Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte noted on Monday that such attacks have been recurrent since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
