A Parisian café, lost copies, a high school student’s love letter to her maths teacher: that’s all it takes for Julie, a dog walker in her spare time, to embark on a mad investigation. She has little time to avoid the worst, the teenager seems ready for anything. Where to start ? Find the teacher, and train him until dawn in a frantic race…
This is the starting point for Little Love Lesson, the second feature film by screenwriter and director Eve Deboise, who previously directed Paradise Lost, released in 2012.
With Little Love Lesson, the filmmaker forms an unprecedented film couple, made up of Pierre Deladonchamps (L’Inconnu du lac, Les Chatouilles, Eiffel) and Laetitia Dosch (At the same time, Les Appearances, Jeune femme). As the sparkling trailer illustrates, this comedy relies a lot on the tandem of the film, on a very dialogical scenario, very anchored in the city of Paris and its outskirts, and with a light atmosphere with the false airs of Woody Allen or American romcom classics.
“I was nurtured by American comedies of the thirties, forties and fifties“, indicates the director and screenwriter Eve Deboise in the press kit. “Besides the cinematic pleasure they give us, they lift our spirits in the blink of an eye. Frank Capra’s New York Miami, with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, is a film that I have always adored: I like this movement which pushes dissatisfied beings to get lost on side roads and which leads them towards a bubble of oxygen and pleasure.“
The idea for the film came to Eve Deboise when she herself felt lost in the anonymity of big cities like Paris. The filmmaker explains:In a comic way, too, depression can lead to paranoid states, cause scandals for completely innocuous things. The idea was for two people in this borderline state to crash into each other.“
“But there is someone even more vulnerable than them who will have to be saved… and that will make them go back up the slope… I wanted that from this fortuitous collusion something funny is born , and even happy ones: unexpected encounters, a fantasy, a poetry… As if these two characters loved each other and orbited others, just as lost as them…“
Little lesson of love comes out in theaters this Wednesday.
