Live in Vienna Flex – Lauren Mayberry with potential and ambivalences

Personal Jesus instead of machines
Unfortunately, Mayberry in Vienna is moving away from the original idea of dedicating a suitable cover song to each country. While the Germans were still dancing to Nena’s “99 Luftballons”, the singer in this country is paying homage to Depeche Mode with the deadpan “Personal Jesus”. A tribute to a beautiful tour of the early Chvrches days that Mayberry has fond memories of. But no Falco, no “Maschin” for the ten-year-old and no “Tirolerzeit” from the Zellberg Buam. She humorously remarks that in the early days she and her band often only played seven songs per evening and worried about whether it was even worth the fans’ entry fee. Now for the solo premiere today there are ten, which with all the interludes, samples and the friendly audience interaction stretch out to a tedious 50 minutes of playing time. The songs have potential, the voice is great and the stage idea is designed for more – but at the moment the whole thing still seems very half-baked. Concert evening analysis in one word? Ambivalent.
