Living trends: 11 simple tips on how to get the most out of your balcony

Whether spring, summer or autumn: the balcony serves as a small holiday oasis at home. But how do you create the right ambience? With these balcony trends and tips you can pimp your balcony!

If you already have the privilege of having a balcony or terrace, make the most of it! How do you best do it? One time cleaning, mucking out, scrubbing – and then nothing like the following balcony trends:

Take advantage of 1st place

Whether wicker furniture, pieces of wood or metal: whatever you like is allowed. The only important thing is that the furniture matches your balcony. That said, squeezing a wicker armchair onto a mini balcony might prove to be less subtle.

It is better to make optimal use of corners, walls, and possibly the roof and railing. Doesn’t the round table fit on your tiny balcony? No problem, then you grab a crescent-shaped table that you can move to the railing. The same applies to plants that are guaranteed to feel comfortable on a corner shelf. If you don’t want to do without sun protection, you should get an umbrella that can either be attached to the railing or to the ceiling. This saves you a lot of space and makes clever use of every free space down to the last detail.

2. Plants

Plants are (also) there to be looked at – it is well known that their beauty is not only suitable as natural decoration, but also has a stress-relieving effect. So off to the florist and see what he’s offering.

Typical balcony plants such as cape daisies, geraniums, petunias or oleanders for the south-facing balcony are usually very popular. For shady balconies, on the other hand, the fuchsia, tuberous begonias, the hardworking lizards or bluebells are suitable. If you like it more unusual: How about bamboo, the blue dwarf palm or even tiger lilies? Grab what you like and can adapt to the conditions on your balcony.

Tip: Plant hanging baskets that are hung from the ceiling are ideal for small balconies. The braided versions in the Boho style are trendy. They make the balcony look much more homely and cozy.

3. Quality over quantity

Whether furniture or watering can: on the balcony it is worthwhile to rely on stable and weatherproof pieces of furniture. The more you can trust your furniture that it will not give up, the less stress you will have afterwards: no more carrying in and out at the sight of a rain cloud, no more being dragged back and forth to the attic or the basement.

And what about the watering can? Well, it is ideal as a decorative element if you don’t use the cheap version. You will be amazed how beautiful watering cans can be – an investment for life!

4. Narrow shelf

The same applies to the balcony as to the rest of the apartment: storage space is essential to keep things tidy! A chic, stable but narrow shelf is best for pots, secateurs, work gloves and the like. Between the work material you can z. B. Place flower pots with herbs to make it look fancier.

Ideally, the shelf is made of the same material as your balcony chairs or table. This is how you create the necessary harmony on balconies!

5. Pewter basket, candles, mason jars

Decoration is not only allowed, but also desired – after all, it conjures up the feel-good atmosphere on your balcony. Pewter baskets, colorful mason jars and timeless candles are currently very much in vogue.

Which colors you choose is up to your taste. The same applies to the choice between tealights and thick candles. Mason jars can be decoratively filled with sand and shells – or for storing seeds. Your imagination knows no boundaries!

6. Blankets & pillows

Make a second living room out of your balcony! This is especially successful if you ensure warmth and cosiness – in other words: for pillows under the bottom and a cozy blanket for cool evenings. Natural colors and patterns are particularly suitable for balconies and patios. If you opt for light yellow, beige or green, you can at least add to the look of the balcony.

If you have enough space, for example a terrace, you can also use a mattress, porch swing or hammock.

7. Carpet

You can put a nice rug on the balcony for your feet. If it is made of plastic, it can withstand a lot. Those who cannot reconcile this with their image of a balcony can also use wooden tiles or artificial turf.

The following applies to wooden tiles: the darker they are, the more elegant your balcony will look! A lush green artificial turf, on the other hand, serves as an eye-catcher.

8. String of lights

Whether on the ceiling, house wall or on the balcony railing, whether between the wooden tiles, on the balcony door frame or in a flower box: fairy lights always ensure relaxed romance!

9. Sun or umbrella

As long as we live in Germany and are exposed to four seasons, it is advisable to choose a multifunctional umbrella that protects against both sun and rain – depending on your needs.

When buying, pay particular attention to the color and the quality of the workmanship so that the umbrella can withstand wind and storms. The color should not fade if it gets too much sunshine or rainwater. In this case, too, quality is required!

10. Bamboo roller blinds

Whether on the balcony window or on the edge of the balcony: roller blinds not only protect against the looks of curious neighbors, but also conjure up a shady, undisturbed place in a charming way. Bamboo roller blinds are trendy right now – and look great on any balcony!

If you like it more stable, you can use wooden panels and place them on the side edges of the balcony. However, it must be taken into account that such panels take up more space than roller blinds.

If you don’t have a view of a sea, a lake or a river on your personal balcony, you can bring that water feeling home with the right decoration. How about a decoration made of net, for example attached to the railing or hung on the wall?
