Liz Cheney calls Trump’s election actions scarier than expected

Ms Cheney, a commanding presence on the Congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot in the United States Capitol by Trump supporters, has warned of a descent into vitriolic partisan attacks that will could tear apart the political fabric of the country and urged his audience to rise above politics.

“My fellow countrymen, we stand on the edge of an abyss, and we must step back,” former Vice President Dick Cheney’s 55-year-old daughter said in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Simi Valley, California.

“As the full picture emerges with the Jan. 6 commission, it has become clear that the efforts Donald Trump oversaw and engaged in were even scarier and more threatening than we could have imagined,” Cheney said.

“We have to choose, because Republicans cannot be loyal to Donald Trump and be loyal to the Constitution at the same time,” she added. “We should not read people who are more loyal to themselves, or to power, than to our Constitution.”

By opposing Trump, Cheney has become an outcast in a Republican party that welcomes conservative nabs like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, both loyal Trump allies.

After being ousted from the party leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, censored by the Republican National Committee and no longer recognized by his state party, Cheney faces a show of strength against Trump in the primary. Republican on August 16 in his home state of Wyoming.

Trump has made her a primary target of his revenge campaign against his perceived Republican enemies and she is trailing in the polls by his Trump-backed Republican opponent Harriet Hageman.

In a speech punctuated by cheers and applause, Mr. Cheney praised the bravery of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who testified in a public hearing on Tuesday that Mr. Trump knew the crowd of supporters he had summoned Washington was armed, including with assault rifles, when he urged them to march on the Capitol and sought in vain to join them.

Crowds stormed the Capitol in a bid to stop Congress from certifying Democratic President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump.

“His superiors – men, many years older, a number of them – hide behind executive privilege, anonymity and intimidation. But his bravery and patriotism yesterday was awe-inspiring to see,” said Cheney.

Hutchinson was a top aide to Mark Meadows, then Trump’s White House chief of staff. She testified to her conversations with him and with former White House adviser Pat Cipollone, who has now been subpoenaed by the committee.
