The 75th edition of the Locarno Film Festival is coming to an end. After ten days of competition in very hot weather and no less than 226 films screened, the jury chaired by Michel Merkt has delivered its verdict. Brazilian director Júlia Murat’s film Rule 34 won the Pardo d’oro, Grand Prize at the City of Locarno Festival.

Very sulphurous, the feature film follows the story of Simone, a 23-year-old young woman who studies criminal law and defends women’s rights. At night, she engages in her activity as a “camgirl” – a term used to designate people who deliver sexual performances online – for virtual currency. A new experience will force the heroine to explore her dark side and her hidden desires.

The film’s title refers to the “rule 34”, an expression born on the Internet which means that for any image, expression or situation, there is a pornographic equivalent. Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, describes this Grand Prix as “bold and political work intended to leave a mark”. Rule 34 is projected on the Piazza Grande, this August 13, on the occasion of the closing ceremony.
