Logbook – On the day of Charles’s proclamation, stage in Llandovery

Nina Droff

Charles III was officially proclaimed king. If he will only be officially crowned in a few months, he will already have to prove to his subjects that he is capable of devoting himself to his country as Queen Elisabeth did. But he won’t have to convince the whole country. In the small village of Llandovery, in Wales, which has just over 2000 inhabitants, we know and appreciate King Charles III. Indeed, his Welsh residence is only a few miles away.

Wedged between two hills, the small village with colorful houses of Llandovery seems deserted at first sight. But, by pushing the door of the local museum at the entrance of the city, we find a dozen people gathered around a radio set which broadcasts the proclamation ceremony of King Charles III. On the death of Queen Elizabeth II, he succeeded his mother.

“We are living a moment of history, it’s fascinating …”, confides a woman at the microphone of Europe 1.

King Charles has won the hearts of the locals since he moved into his royal residence a few kilometers from the village in 2008. Jean and Lucy have even seen him often walking in the square in front of the museum.

“He comes here every year for his annual visit to Wales, but also for personal visits,” another told us. “He likes to walk around here because he feels safe… People leave him alone, alone with his thoughts.”

A resident praises the qualities of the new king: “He is a really charming man, down to earth, very nice, I hope he will bring that to his job.” And Charles’ popularity is high in Llandovery. “He is very popular here, he has done a lot for this city, large donations… We are proud that he chose this place”, boasts another.

“We have a new Prince of Wales now”

It is therefore with great pride but also a pang in the heart that they listen to this ceremony. “I don’t know if we’ll see him around here again, he’s going to be very busy now… But we have a new Prince of Wales now. We’ll see if Kate and William come to see us.”

In the meantime, the museum hopes that his ascension to the title of king will again attract tourists to the village.
