To comply with new European legislation, the Digital Markets Act, Microsoft must change the way you log in to your Microsoft account from a program.
We regularly talk about new European legislation affecting digital and associated fields. The Old Continent is taking more and more measures to regulate what has existed for a long time, such as social networksand what is recent, like theartificial intelligence. Those of Digital Markets Actor DMA (not to be confused with the DSA) has been in force since May 2, 2023. They particularly concern large tech companies, especially in terms of competition and of user security.
As a result, firms sometimes have to modify their products more or less in depth to comply with the requirements of the DMA. Microsoft is no exception to the rule and announces that from January 2024, nationals ofEuropean Economic Area will see a change when they log into their Microsoft account on Windows. More precisely at the time of log into a program using this account under Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Microsoft is changing the way you log in to your Microsoft account on Windows in Europe
In detail: “the first application or service that the user accesses in the latest versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 will display a new notice to users. This notice will ask users if they want to log in to the application with the same credentials used to log in to Windows”. Currently, entering your Microsoft credentials into a program automatically connects to all others that use it. This will therefore no longer be the case by default.

Luckily, you only have to do this once. “If the user chooses to use the same credentials used to log in to Windows, this notice will no longer appear,” specifies the Redmond firm. Note that if you refuse, you will have “the option to [vous] log in to the app with different credentials,” with the understanding that “while the app can be used without logging in, the user can also choose to use the app without authentication.” This change will be deployed on Windows 10 and 11 between January and March 2024.
