We now know the 5 League of Legends champions by the players of EDward Gaming, winner of the 2021 World Championships. Not surprisingly, all of them chose a champion with whom they had shone during the competition. But Riot Games went into great detail when designing its looks. Many small references to the tournament have been integrated into each skin.
Following the first in-game presentation of the skins, many players like saritarookie spotted those little details, and there are plenty of them! Here is what you can identify if you look carefully at the animations of the different characters.
Yuumi or the love of a cat
Yuumi’s ultimate represents Meiko’s five participations in the international tournament, from his first to last appearance, as he is one of the longest-serving players on the competitive circuit who had yet to win the biggest League of Legends title. The dots represent the following:
- 2015 World Championships in Europe (quarter-finals).
- 2016 World Championships in USA (quarter-finals)
- 2017 World Championships in China (group stage)
- 2018 World Championships in Korea (quarter-finals)
- 2021 Worlds in Reykjavik (Winner)
Another detail on Yuumi’s skin. We can see during the recall animation a hand delicately grabbing the little chatounet. This is a nod to Meiko’s cat, who wanted to pay tribute to the companion of her life for keeping him company through the happiest and saddest times since his debut 8 years ago.
Viego and the history of Edward Gaming
Viego’s skin even includes two very interesting nods to the history of the Chinese team in this Championship:
- On the one hand, we see that five symbols appear in this order: V/D/D/D/V/V/V. This streak shows the results EDward Gaming has achieved in all series which he contested at last year’s Worlds.
- On the other hand, you can see how Viego plants an EDG flag right behind him, which refers to Clearlove’s and now JieJie’s strategy when it comes to making that camp and preventing the enemy jungler from getting in. one way or another.
Zoe and her quest for world fame
As you can see in the video, Zoe tries to get her hands on a gem that appears during her back, and manages to catch it on the fourth attempt. This depicts something similar to Yuumi’s ending with Meiko, the times she tries to grab the gem being all of Scout’s appearances at Worldsincluding those of 2021 during which he finally became world champion.
Graves becomes a hardcore K-Pop fan
Graves, as with Viego, adds two references that are very different from each other but completely representative of Flandre, the legendary top laner who made half the world fall in love with him during these world championships.
On the one hand, we see that Graves “by mistake” pulls out the weapons of Lucian, in reference to the champion with whom he began to mark the history of the competitive circuit of League of Legends and with which he sweeps the Rift of the summoner whenever he chooses.
However, after throwing away those guns, he finds what he really wanted: a microphone. This object refers to an ornament used by (G)I-DLE, Flanders’ favorite K-Pop group.
Aphelios
First, we can see a reference to Viper on Aphelios’ skin with the gesture he made during the final of the LPL Summer Split: a dab.
Yes, we know it might be a little old fashioned, but we can’t fault a world champion who can humble us in minutes in Summoner’s Rift. We can also note the appearance of a draconic emblem, the silver dragon, symbol of the soul of EDG. The 5 champion weapons are also represented by shiny dragon scales which, once assembled, become the cup of the Worlds.
