LoL: Disappointing ratings for MSI… G2 lagging behind?

the MSI has a little trouble getting started and on the networks, many are wondering about the format. In addition to being stuck in the middle of the season between Spring and Summer, the first phase is struggling to excite with a lot of stomps. It is therefore not surprising to see that the audiences are not crazy this year. After a while it’s not even fun to see T1, RNG and G2 (all undefeated) crush the competition. The audiences testify to this relative lack of interest in the competition… The figures are bad and we will have to see if the start of the Rumble Stage will manage to reverse the trend.

It is impossible and above all useless to look for a culprit. The reasons are multiple and Riot Games should perhaps ask themselves questions to avoid falling into a negative spiral. But we can’t help but notice that G2 is struggling to capture the attention of European audiences.

Falling numbers in all areas

Esports Charts provides very interesting data on esports competitions and their broadcasts. Obviously, there are some limits: we do not have access to all the figures without having a subscription and the statistics of the Chinese platforms are not taken into account. However, we can still have an overall idea of the evolution, year after year. And the MSI 2022 shows lower numbers compared to the previous edition.

  • Hours seen : 17,346,360 hours (-37% compared to 2021)
  • Peak of viewers : 818,636 viewers (-30%)
  • Average number of viewers : 440,077 (-37%)

The figures compare the two group stages and nothing says that the Rumble Stage and the playoffs will also be down. But we don’t see the trend reversing… not least because European fans seem to have trouble getting interested in the competition, despite the convincing debut of G2 Esports.

G2, left behind in the popularity ranking

As said very well Targamas, the hierarchy of the MSI seems already established. Except huge surprise, the top 3 should be composed of T1, RNG and G2, now remains to determine the order. But while the Samurai are at the top end, they are a bit behind in popularity. Looking at the ranking of the teams in relation to the average number of viewers, we get this top 5:

  • T1 : 575,000
  • DFM : 541,000
  • Aze : 519,000
  • saigon buffalo : 517,000
  • G2 Esports : 462,000

Obviously, the lack of interest from pool C which only had 3 teams can explain this relative lack of interest. But it’s still amazing to see the Samurai so low in the rankings. the Vietnam is delighted to be back internationally, but its population is still much lower than the European population… Especially since the Russia does not have a local representative.

One avenue of explanation to explore would be to study the balance of power between the LECs and ERLs. In France it’s screaming and fans are watching more and more the LFL and the EUM, which took place just before the MSI. The European elite is on the contrary shunned.

lfl-lol

Thunderbolt on the French League of Legends scene. The little prince of toplane, Adam, would pay the price for his bad Spring Split in the LEC. He would have been “punished” and sent back to LFL for the summer… It’s still hard to believe, but the information comes from Wooloo.
