LoL: Healing, a puzzle to balance for Riot Games

League of Legends has already fixed the issue of excessive damage dealt by champions. However, the developer realized that the major adjustments made in the last patches were not entirely effective when it came to healing. This mechanic has been one of the most criticized in recent years, and even gaming pros have joined popular community opinion that Riot Games doesn’t know how to measure how much life characters can recover.

As part of the durability update, healing has been reduced slightly to keep champions who have it under control. However, Successive drops on bleed items allowed them to get a little too powerful.

Balancing care, a real headache for Riot Games

Matt Leung Harrisonlead designer specializing in game balancing, explained on social media “the intention to balance the bleeding effect around 40%”. According to the developer, the goal is for items providing this effect not to be a mandatory purchase. “except in critical situations where there is too much care”. In this way, an adjustment will be made to the objects that provide this effect and each champion will be analyzed individually, making a large number of adjustments both in the next patch 12.12 and in the next 12.13. The ultimate goal is to maintain the changes taken in patch 12.11, of course, to fix the healing issue once and for all.

Matt explained that“Too high a bleed rate can cause challenges when designing champions and requires making healing tools really strong to be competitive.”

But that’s not all: Bleed items aren’t fun to build. Riot wants players to choose more impactful items that empower their own champions rather than keeping enemies in check. “Bleeding harms items that are more valuable to your champion”he added. “So while it has a high rating as a strategic choice, it’s only an intellectually satisfying choice.”

Riot’s first set of healing changes will be implemented in LoL Patch 12.12 and will affect Dr. Mundo, Soraka, Viego, and Yuumi. The developers will evaluate other nerfs to the “case by case”.

After Taliyah or Olaf, we finally know the next League of Legends champion to receive a mid-range update. Direction the bot lane, since it is the martial Virgin, Sivir, who will receive a little (deserved) refreshment of her spells.
