LoL: How many players are there at each rank? Season 12 was the hardest ever


Ranking is the most common goal for League of Legends players. A large majority of the community sets the goal, at the start of the season, of reaching a certain level in ranked. However, this rarely materializes for those aiming to reach the top ranks. Riot Games’ ranking system is brutally honest and the developer takes pride in it, finding no problem bringing users down to earth by telling them, metaphorically, that they’re not as good as they think they are. A reality that is more than proven by the data.

Season 12 ends with a historical reality

Like every time a season ends, we wanted to stop and analyze the League of Legends situation to try to find out how many players there are in each rank. A situation that led to a striking surprise: Season 12 was the most difficult in the history of the game. Barely 35% of the community has reached Gold rank or higher and who will therefore get the victorious Sejuani skin. The number of players who failed to escape Iron Rank has also increased, and the game’s most populated tier is now much lower than it was a year ago.

The first striking detail of the table is the increase in the number of players in the two lowest ranks of the game. The percentage of users in Iron and Bronze is much higher than in the last season, the number of members of the community in the lowest echelon of the game having doubled. A difference which, of course, has an impact on the other levels. Reaching silver, gold, platinum and diamond was harder than last year. The situation was particularly marked in the intermediate zones, which lost around 4% of their population.

One of the most curious consequences of this particular situation is that there has been a change in historical trend in League of Legends. Since the last major adjustments to ranked play, the Gold IV has become the most populated tier in the game. However, in this Season 12, the most populated tier was Silver IV, which garnered 12.3% of the 4,131,260 accounts that played ten or more solo ranked games since January 7 on the EUW server. Another stat that bolsters the theory that this was one of the darkest times to rank ranked.

As for the reasons for this situation, it is true that many League of Legends players have complained about the few points earned during the whole year in ranked. Even with a positive balance, it was difficult to take more than 15 or 16 points with each win, and lose a similar or slightly higher amount with each loss. In that sense, it’s been hard to find those winning streaks that were so important this year to move up the ladder.

So far, Riot Games hasn’t announced any major changes to the ranking system or LP for the upcoming Season 13. While adjustments are planned to improve the player experience, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be easier to reach higher ranks. In this sense, we can expect a continuation of the trend in 2023.
