LoL: Monster trainer skins, a disappointment for the community?

With each League of Legends patch, Riot Games presents its community with new skins. Historically, players complain because they do not find them successful enough – complaints that are becoming more and more recurrent. Some even feel that the studio is doing a bad job and that some appearances are no longer worth the asking price. The brand new Monster Trainer skins that will arrive with patch 12.15 have therefore not escaped – too – a little controversy.

Since their formalizations, many criticisms have been made, the main one being that they would only be vulgar copy paste of already existing appearances.

Remixed old skins?

The main criticism is that, according to many players, Lulu, Kog’Maw and Veigar Monster Tamers are too similar to three of their old skins: Lulu Astro-groove, Kog’Maw Bee and Veigar Cosplay Corgnon. It is true that we can see some similarities there – which has had the gift of annoying some members of the community who see there only simple recolorations with slight modifications.

“It’s like you didn’t even try with it, monster tamer Lulu could have been MUCH better and could have been a Legendary. I’m also surprised we didn’t have champions like Zyra and Zoe? These skins might not work but I hope not.”

The choice of champions was also somewhat disappointing. Last year, Riot Games offered the community to choose a new family of skins from three proposals: Monster Trainers, Criminal Nightmare and Seducer 2.0. It was the second that won and the last, but Seducer 2.0, was also very popular. The studio had therefore decided to also release it later in the year.

At the beginning of 2022, Riot announced that – finally – the third Monster Trainer family was also going to arrive in Summoner’s Rift, and it is now confirmed. The problem is that on the first concept art of this theme, we could see Janna and Ezreal… who were therefore ultimately not selected, unlike the other themes submitted to the vote. For Criminal Nightmare and Seducer 2.0, featured Champions all received the advertised skin. A disappointment therefore for the players, who expected new appearances for the Avatar of the Air and the Prodigal Explorer.

“So you’re giving Akali, Twisted Fate, Leona and Malzahar skins, but not Janna and Ezreal?!” offended a member of the community on Twitter.

Either way, Riot Games decided to introduce this new family to Summoner’s Rift through a reduced number of characters. If it works and knows how to seduce players, we can legitimately hope that other champions will receive an appearance on this theme – whereas if it flop, it will not know a sequel. We remember the Demacia Vice family which only had one edition with Garen and Darius in 20119. In the end, it will still be up to the community to decide.

While the Guardians of the Stars event started two weeks ago on League of Legends, Riot Games decided to put on a layer. A new video featuring Akali battling her dark side has just been released.
