Riot Games tests new League of Legends features for months before they even hit the PBE. The developer has an analysis team that examines the additions by playing games on the company’s internal servers and studying the potential pitfalls of their introduction. However, a few thinking heads – no matter how brilliant – aren’t enough to prevent the ideas that millions of players around the world will have when they gain access to new items or champions. This has been proven once again with the arrival of the 2023 pre-season.
The strategy that jeopardizes the rankeds
The strategy basically consists of using two champions in the jungle. However, we are not talking about a change in the distribution of team roles. There will always be one champion on the top lane, one in the jungle, the third on the mid lane, and the two remaining members will share the bot lane. The idea is to have the mid laner and jungler swap positions at different points in the game so that two characters can take advantage of new items introduced specifically for that position and related to Smite.
To implement this strategy, the mid laner and jungler must choose Smite as their summoner spell and the early game steps are as follows:
- The jungler and mid laner start as usual, buying their regular items. Under no circumstances should the mid laner buy the companion at the start of the game.
- After the jungler gains the first Smite buff (20 stacks), the mid laner returns to base and buys their companion. The jungler stays on the mid lane.
- When the champion who started the game as a mid laner also gets 20 charges, the swap happens again.
- After the champion who started the game as a jungler finishes charging their item, they move to mid lane until their ally has finished charging their companion as well.
If all goes well, shortly after the 20th minute, both champions should be able to complete charging the item and won’t have lost too much gold along the way. Although we may suffer penalties, the accumulated charges of the jungle object (which offers more gold if we spend time not farming) will compensate for this. So from this point on, both will perform much better than normal. The control of League of Legends neutral targets is also optimized, whether they are elemental dragons, the Herault or Baron Nashor himself.
This strategy has one weakness: it is difficult to execute and can make the laning phase very complicated in exchange for a long-term improvement. However, when players who apply it manage their small early game disadvantage well, they benefit from hard-to-improve scaling that also leaves them in a great tactical position. Controlling epic monsters is very important in League of Legends games, especially in higher level games where this strategy is supposed to work best.
