LoL: Riot’s hated game mode that will never be available again

The lack of variety in alternate game modes in League of Legends has become one of the biggest community debates over the past few years. Riot Games barely works on this facet of events and the same modes keep coming back: Nexus Siege, One for All, Grimoire Ultimate and the URF. A situation that has intrigued players and led the community to remember some of the most curious modes that have arrived in the game. Among them, one that the developers consider the most disastrous in the history of MOBA.

The game mode hated by the developers

We’re talking about the Nemesis Draft (or Draft des Némésis in French), introduced in 2015. This game mode was simply diabolical and will probably have broken a few friendships. The principle was simple: on the Summoner’s Rift map, you choose the champions… of the opposing team.. You had three bans and the ability to swap your champion with your teammates after the pick and ban phase. Even if you didn’t own the champion, you could still trade.

This mode was particularly funny because the composition of the teams was often a big nonsense. Full support teams, Nunu/Aatrox/Urgot and so on, you had to know how to adapt and sometimes you found yourself somehow playing a champion you had never tried! On paper, the mode seemed excessively fun, especially if you managed to collect 9 of your friends. The problem is that the mode quickly turned into a real disaster that hardly anyone wanted to play on a regular basis.

The problem the game ran into is obvious. Differences in how different players approached the mode led to issues with teammates and opponents. Some wanted to experience what it was like to face off against two fun lineups that you would almost never see in any other game mode, others wanted to troll their opponents with atypical characters, and there was even a group of players who wanted to see their favorite champions in other hands. These disagreements often resulted in matches that weren’t pleasant at all.

Riot Games itself recognized the problem when it had to make decisions about which game modes would be part of League of Legends events. Nemesis Draft had its own section separate from all the others. The situation was so exaggerated that the developer said: “We can say without a doubt that he will never come back. It sounds drastic, but the idea of taking all decisions away from you and sticking you in a game among players who are probably only there to troll goes against all odds. the gameplay values we want to keep in League.”

In fact, it’s not the only League of Legends development that has run into problems relying entirely on community interest. Riot Games had a similar situation with what seemed like an interesting change to ranked matches, allowing players to have a different rank for each role. However, some users used this freedom to “troll” whenever they had to play a role that was not their main one, and the mode never made it past the regional beta stage on some servers.

Ultimately, it’s worth noting that Nemesis Draft isn’t entirely dead. Although it won’t return to the client, the developer is using the game mode in controlled environments. Professional exhibition matches or more casual events like All Star benefit from this system on a relatively regular basis, making for some pretty enjoyable matches. Now, if you really miss the mode, there is an alternative. Gather 10 people and play a custom game according to the rules you like.

The well-known League of Legends content creator showed in one of his streams that healing is still a big deal in Riot Games’ MOBA through an enemy Kayn encountered in his game.
