After an initial confirmation of the information by Blix.gg, the LEC formalized the takeover of the Misfits Gaming slot by Team Heretics via a press release. The team founded by several Spanish influencers including TheGrefg, former viewer record holder on Twitch before streamer Ibai. The team is very popular in Spain and has a high chance of boost audiences for the League of Legends European Championship.

We are excited to welcome our newest League of Legends European Championship member, Team Heretics, who will begin competing in the 2023 season! The Spanish organization is set to replace Misfits Gaming after earning its place in the league.
One of the most popular esports organizations in Spain, with many talented teams in several different leagues, Team Heretics is looking to push the boundaries even further and become a powerhouse in the LEC. Winners of one of Spain’s biggest esports competitions, the LVP SuperLiga, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.
As excited as we are to welcome Team Heretics to the LEC, we’re sad to see Team Misfits go. They have been a central part of the European League of Legends scene since their inception in 2016, and have given us more unforgettable surprises than any other team in the league. We want to thank Misfits Gaming for an incredible five years competing in the LEC and for being a fantastic partner. We are sure to speak on behalf of everyone saying they will be truly missed!
Misfits will continue to compete in the LEC until the end of the 2022 season. We can’t wait to see what the team has in store for the rest of the season, and how the organization develops going forward. We’re excited to see the Heretics team enter the LEC in Spring 2023 and shake up the competition!

Misfits, for its part, also published a press release detailing their other plans after the LEC leaves. As such, all Misfits Gaming Group player contracts will expire at the end of the season. Riot Games has also confirmed that Misfits will leave the LFL.

Misfits’ mission has always been centered on building iconic and inclusive brands that empower our community to embrace what makes them unique. We’ve partnered with a diverse and innovative roster of creators who have visions to do more than just stream and compete. Our role as Misfits Gaming Group is to use our creative, strategic and financial resources to help our talent bring their ideas and dreams to life.[…] It’s bittersweet to know that our mission to diversify means we can’t be everywhere at once and we’re sad to say goodbye to the camaraderie and competitiveness of the LEC, but we didn’t make that decision to lightly and we conducted an exhaustive process of reviewing numerous offers from interested parties and came to the decision that the Heretics team was the right selection to continue as responsible stewards of the League. – Ben Spoont, co-founder and CEO of Misfits Gaming Group
