After a meeting against Misfits Gamingmasterfully dominated, the G2 Esports have been there first team to validate their ticket for the world championships. A brief reminder of the qualification procedures in Europe: qualified directly (without going through the Regional Qualifier) teams that have won the Summer Split and the team that accumulated the most circuit points throughout the season (if it is the same team, then the second team in points qualifies). Following their Spring Split victory and their performances at the Summer Split (notably their 2-0 against the Rogue, their spring split dolphins), the samurai are at least guaranteed to be first in terms of league points.
Back to play a dirty trick on us?
There are world stage veterans at G2 Esports. Jankos will participate in its fifths world championships since 2016. In seven years, he will therefore have missed this great meeting only twice (2017 and 2021). Caps does even better, because he too will celebrate his five worlds but only arrived on the world stage in 2017. Both players will be among the competition’s arch-veterans, and only a certain Faker at T1 or a Bjergsen from Team Liquid could boast of having more experience than them. As for BrokenBladeit will be his second participationand the player will want to do much better than his 0-6 with TSM in 2020.
On the other hand, it will be a great first for Flakked and Targamas. The two players from european leagues “inferior” (in the sense that do not qualify their teams for official Riot Games global events) will have experienced a superb first year in the European elitewith at least one victory in the LEC (Spring), a participation in the MSI (top 3/4) and a qualifying for world championships. We will not write that they did not dare to hope, because joining G2 is necessarily joining a team that will play to win these precious sesames (in the same way as Fnatic, Rogue and MAD Lions), but this qualification must offer a certain relief, that of having met fan expectations.
In the shoes of a favourite?
Even though he is still a bit early to answer this question, because the performance in the playoffs will give more information on the real state of form of the team, G2 esports does not seem to be as dominant today as in the past. Although the team made a good performance at MSI, she still took 3-0 against T1 in the first knockout match (1-1 in pool). Moreover, we cannot not say that she dominated the LEC head and shoulders. It is therefore difficult to stick thefavorite tagbut at least it will take some of the pressure on the shoulders of rookies.
