LoL: The Pentakill that Riot Games hates to see and which demonstrates the problem of old champions


League of Legends will soon be thirteen years old and the passage of time for Riot Games’ MOBA can be seen just by looking at the champions. Although the developers have made efforts to revamp the game over time with major character updates and general system changes, the differences are still evident. Comparing a hero released in recent years with one of the oldest may come as a surprise, since it is almost impossible to understand that Samira and Nasus are part of the same game.

A Pentakill that no longer has its place today

One of the most obvious manifestations of this type of situation is when a player gains sufficient advantage during a game. If we talk about champions who can exploit it well, the result will be pretty much the same. We all know there are characters that can wipe out entire enemy teams and easily get a Pentakill. However, it’s not just the consequence of an opponent going out of control, but also the feeling they generate when they go into this berserker mode where they are able to knock down HP at full speed.

It’s in situations like the ones the community wanted to share that the starkest differences between new and old champions become apparent. In this clip, Nasus gets a Pentakill by simply moving forward, without having to try too hard and without resulting in any particularly exciting moments. To understand the difference, you have to ask yourself what an identical move would look like if we controlled any champion released recently. Nilah, Bel’Veth, Vex, Akshan, or even Viego could achieve the same thing — but with much more effort.

All of the aforementioned characters have to use their spells and have a bit more room for error. However, Nasus enters a mode that Riot Games defines as “statcheck”. This term, in the words of the developers, occurs when “a player’s individual skills become less important to the outcome of a fight”. Something that gives too much importance to purely mathematical concepts such as level, accumulated loadouts or other statistics with which League of Legends calculates the damage inflicted and the resistances of each of the champions.

Riot Games removed all champions in similar situations

Champions like Nasus have (almost) disappeared from League of Legends. In fact, Riot Games has done quite a bit of tweaking in similar cases, like the old Poppy or the old version of Sion. It’s a trend that, although it has grown in recent years, has been present in the game since 2012. From that date, the pace of updates slowed, and almost every champion released (or redesigned) abandoned a design philosophy that is hated by all developers today.
