LoL: The two characters who share an (almost) identical ability

Whenever a new champion comes to League of Legends, we look for similarities in their skills with other characters that already exist in the game. We weren’t spared from saying that Nilah’s ultimate was a slight tweak of Diana’s ultimate, or making inevitable and odious comparisons between Leona and Rell. Simplifying things like this is an easy way to learn how characters work, but it also makes us judge Riot Games staff unfairly.

The most similar abilities in League of Legends

We usually exaggerate, but there are situations where League of Legends developers lacked originality . A situation that the community wanted to highlight, trying to find the two skills belonging to different champions that are most similar to each other. To do this, you need to pay close attention to detail. For example, many players ruled out cases like Morgana (Q – Dark Binding) and Lux (Q – Light Binding) because the latter can affect two enemies. However, this is a special case that deserves some attention.

Morgana and Lux’s abilities are nearly identical

Technically, Q of Morgana and Q of Lux are almost the same ability. Both spells have the same effect and are coded almost identically: they have the same range (1300 units), move at the same speed (1200 units/s), and have the same width (140 units). In fact, knowing how Riot Games creates the abilities, it seems very likely that they coded them using the “copy and paste” function and making changes to the numbers or adding in the case of Lux that his cage may affect up to two opponents.

The cases are similar for Yasuo and Yone with their respective A’s, only differing in the effect obtained after 2 stacked effects. The same goes for Nasus and Renekton’s ultimates, which have nearly identical effects but are tailored to each champion’s skill set. However, even though we’ve ruled out some of League of Legends’ big similarities, there are still some great candidates. One of them is Skarner, who has very similar spells to other champions.

  • Skarner and Rumble : The shields of the two characters are very similar, having a rather low value and increasing their movement speed. The differences lie in this increased speed. As Rumble receives it imminently and decays in time, Skarner can double his acceleration if his shield remains active for several seconds.
  • Skarner and Hecarim : Both have Q dealing damage in a circle around the champion that increases upon successful use, increasing their damage. The main difference is that Hecarim can stack once more and also directly reduces his cooldown. Skarner, meanwhile, has to give a basic attack.
Kayn and Bel'Veth share an identical ability. - League of Legends
Kayn and Bel’Veth share an identical ability.

Having dismissed such close cases for such minute details as those that differentiate Skarner from his imitators, we couldn’t settle for that. Nevertheless, we have a winning pair. We’re referring to Rhaast (Kayn Rouge) and Bel’Veth, whose Zs barely differ. Both knock enemies into the air, then apply a slow and deal damage. The method of application is identical: a 200 unit wide rectangle with a range of approximately 700 units that activates after 0.5 seconds of channeling. The only difference is the duration of the obstruction and the type of damage.

It’s definitely the winning comparison and it’s striking that it’s two relatively new champions who share a spell. Even more so considering that other characters, like Nilah, have also been accused of having unoriginal abilities. Usually we focus on his aforementioned ultimate, but the most egregious case is her E (Torrent) which is almost identical to the cast version of Samira’s E (Wild Charge). Fortunately, this is far from being a trend and Riot Games is still as original.

We thought this little League of Legends character was little more than a cute accessory, but the reality is that Lulu’s pet Pix can be defeated in battle just like any other champion.
