(Reuters) – British competition authority CMA has announced that it has opened an in-depth investigation into the impact in Britain of the proposed merger between Suez and Veolia, the two groups having failed to respond to its concerns.

The CMA estimated at the beginning of December that the merger of the two groups was likely to generate a loss of competition in the water supply and waste management market in Great Britain and therefore to increase financial charges for municipalities.

The British regulator then gave companies five working days to submit proposals to address its concerns.

Neither Veolia nor Suez immediately responded to a request for comment after the opening of the in-depth investigation.
