One day before the end of the extended Ascension weekend, the return traffic heading north caused a long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard tunnel.
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, vehicles were backed up for eight kilometers.
Drivers needed around 80 minutes for the motorway section between Faido and Airolo in Ticino, as the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) announced on Twitter.
According to one Evaluation of the Viasuisse traffic service, traffic jams had already formed in front of the Gotthard south portal in 2022 and from 2015 to 2019, before the corona pandemic, on the Saturday of the Ascension weekend.
However, Viasuisse expects the larger wave of return journeys for Sunday: in 2022, in the late afternoon of Sunday after the ascent, the sheet metal snake grew to 15 kilometers in length.
