Looks like France loves TikTok

TikTok is experiencing growing popularity in France. This can be seen even in the place that the application occupies on the French Internet.

This is an indicator of the growing place that TikTok occupies in France. In its latest report on the state of the Internet in France, published on June 30, the telecoms regulator provided a list of the main sources of traffic. And for the first time, we find the famous application of singing in playback (and many other things) in the top.

It is in fact its parent company, ByteDance, which is mentioned in the report, in sixteenth place out of eighteen, between LimeLight (an Internet content provider which sells services to cache data on behalf of other companies, in order to make them more quickly accessible) and Valve, the video game studio behind the Steam platform.

The appearance of ByteDance for the first time in the annual reports of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (its name does not appear in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 editions, in particular) illustrates the very strong success enjoyed by the application in France . This is all the more remarkable given that TikTok is a very young app, whose international debut dates back to 2017.

The load that TikTok causes on the networks is explained by the nature of the service, which consists in broadcasting videos – all the other functionalities, which are incidental, are only intended to serve this primary purpose. We do almost only that: share clips and consume them, massively – TikTok nevertheless tries to encourage its community to moderate.

French Internet users are spending more and more time on TikTok

But if it is true that video is undoubtedly the activity that requires the most data, this characteristic does not explain everything. There must also be millions of Internet users who consume these videos to generate traffic. Internet users, there are: According to the observations of Médiamétrie, quoted by DNA in February, there are 7 million users every day.

The application is now the tenth most popular in France and its number of daily users has quadrupled since 2019. And that’s not all: French men and women are consuming more and more videos on TikTok: according to We Are Social, the public spends an average of 21 hours per month on TikTok (+22% increase compared to last year).

This is considerable and, above all, it is much more than YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, which have almost all been in decline (12 hours per month on YouTube, 13 hours per month on Facebook, 8 and a half hours on Instagram) for a year. Only Instagram is doing better, stagnating at the same level. This is indicative of a change in usage, especially among young people.

Moreover, the staffs of YouTube and Instagram are not unaware of this: they see the erosion of their attendance and the efforts they are making to try to copy the success of TikTok to counter its rise testify to their panic. . But it is clear that the strategies deployed so far have not been immensely successful.
