Loongson: Chinese processor performance soars in pursuit of Intel and AMD

68% is the performance gain promised in single core by the new Loongson 3A6000 CPUs compared to the previous generation of processors from the Chinese manufacturer. This rise in power should allow them to approach the provision of Zen 3 and Tiger Lake architectures from AMD and Intel.

The Middle Kingdom seems determined to make up for lost time in the field of CPUs. On the occasion of a biannual conference organized with its shareholders, the Chinese manufacturer Loongson announced the forthcoming launch of a new range of processors supposed to develop sufficiently high performance to approach those of older generations of processors from Intel and AMD.

AMD and Intel soon equaled?

For its 3A6000 processors, Loongson notably plans to switch to its new LA664 architecture (instead of the GS464V design used last year for its 3A5000 chips). This change in architecture shows promise on paper with a sufficiently notable gain in IPC to allow the 3A6000 chips to match the AMD Zen 3 and Intel Tiger Lake architectures. An interesting projection since the Sino-Chinese Loongson chips would then be able to compete with the penultimate generation of processors launched by the two American giants.

In detail, Loongson also mentions a substantial increase in computing performance single core compared to its previous line of processors. In this case, the manufacturer speaks of +68% in single-core floating-point and +37% in single-core fixed-point.

Chinese processors… dedicated to the Chinese market

As reported WCCFTech, Loongson initially seems to want to compete with some AMD Ryzen and EPYC chips in the Chinese market. To do this, the firm plans to release its first 16-core 3A6000 chips in early 2023, quickly followed by the 32-core variants in mid-2023. In 2024, the 3A7000 ranges will then take over by offering up to 64 cores.

As a reminder, last year Loongson unveiled its 3A5000 quad-core CPUs using the Chinese GS464V 64-bit architecture. This design already supported dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory, along with a primary encryption module, two 256-bit vector units per core, and four logical arithmetic units. WCCFTech points out that the new line of processors announced by Loongson also works with four HyperTransport 3.0 SMP controllers, which allowed last year to “ multiple 3A5000s to operate in unison in a single system “. A relevant solution on the data center and server market, in particular.
