T-Mobile US confirms hacker attack

The US subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom has been the victim of a cyber attack. The hackers are said to have gained access to data from around 100 million people and offered them for sale. According to the company, the leak should now be closed.

The American telecommunications subsidiary T-Mobile US has been the victim of a cyber attack. The attackers had gained access to some data, said the cell phone provider. At the same time, it has not yet been possible to determine that personal customer information is also affected. The website “Motherboard” had written over the weekend that data on more than 100 million people would be offered on the Internet, which, according to the seller, came from the company’s servers.

In addition to names, telephone numbers and addresses, the information also includes US social security numbers and driver’s license data. With such extensive data sets, online criminals could cause considerable damage, for example through identity theft. T-Mobile US was convinced that the gateway for the attackers had meanwhile been closed. It will continue to be checked which data has been accessed. This will take some time. Only then will it be possible to say how many customer accounts are affected.

Deutsche Telekom holds around 43 percent of T-Mobile US, but already has control through a voting rights agreement with its Japanese partner Softbank and includes the US subsidiary fully in its own group figures. More than a year ago, Deutsche Telekom secured the option in negotiations with Softbank to take over the majority of shares in T-Mobile US.
