Loss of smell following Covid-19, this app helps to find it

Loss of smell is one of the most common symptoms of Covid-19 and can last for some time. Feeling nothing can be particularly disabling thus, French researchers have developed an application to re-educate your nose.

Anosmia or loss of smell is a typical symptom of Covid-19. According to a recent study, it lasts about one to two weeks but in 5% of cases, it can last for several months. Viral illnesses such as colds, sinusitis or the flu "destroy the cells of the olfactory epithelium responsible for detecting the odorous molecules circulating in the air ", explained Prof. Pierre Bonfils, head of the ENT and head and neck surgery department at the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital (AP-HP) to Health Magazine. This can be particularly disabling. However, it seems that it is possible to regain smell quickly by training your nose.

According to Prof. Fabrice Denis, oncologist at the Jean – Bernard du Mans center and co-founder of the company Kelindi, "Olfactory rehabilitation is a technique validated in post-infectious anosmia since 2014 and recommended by learned societies to accelerate recovery with nearly 63% improvement in anosmia."

A web application, CovidAnosmie, was then set up to help former Covid-19 patients rehabilitate their noses. The protocol has been validated by Prof. Sylvain Morinière, head of the ENT department at the University Hospital of Tours. He recommends inhalation twice a day (one in the morning and one in the evening) of 4 essential oils specific high concentration: clove with invigorating virtues, refreshing eucalyptus and often used to clear the respiratory system, purifying and energizing lemon and finally, purifying and tonic geranium. These essential oils should be dosed at 2%, or 20 drops in 50 ml of water, and smelled blind. This olfactory training should last several weeks and the results depend largely on the severity of the disorder.
