On the small Alaskan island of Adak, far in the north, a McDonald’s branch is rotting on a former US base. A look at the menu reveals curiosities.

When you look at the map, it’s almost surprising that there was ever a fast food outlet in operation on the small Alaskan island of Adak in the Pacific Ocean. If you take a closer look at the history of the island, however, the reason quickly becomes clear.
The island served as a base for the US military for a while. In order to keep those stationed and their family members happy, a McDonald’s branch was opened in 1986, but it had to close again in 1996 because the base was closed.
YouTuber Chris Luckhardt came across the abandoned fast food branch while visiting the island in August 2022 and also discovered the menu in front of the drive-in. Of course, the burger prices are far below what they are quoted today. Back then, hamburgers and cheeseburgers cost the equivalent of around 50 cents.
But one dish in particular catches the eye: the burger chain had “Dino-Size Fries” in its program 30 years ago. Background: The first Jurassic Park film was released in cinemas at that time. Nobody could have imagined that Steven Spielberg would trigger such a hype that would result in numerous other films.
Film and fast food fans are indulging in nostalgia on social media, and parts of the video recorded in 2022 are literally going viral. Luckhardt was by no means the first to get wind of this lost place. The numerous McDonald’s signs and logos have already been removed or stolen.
