As much as reading a prefectural decree authorizing beats with wild boar or deer is commonplace, the same decisions concerning deer are uncommon. Despite everything, a decree of 2010 which had already been extended in 2020, then again in 2021, shows that the phenomenon is not so rare.

The latest designates the Confluent sector, and the municipalities of Aiguillon, Bazens, Bourran, Clermont-Dessous, Galapian, Lagarrigue and Port-Sainte-Marie, where a herd of a dozen animals has formed, probably escaped from farms.

Damage in the vines

“We regularly ask for these orders for animals that have escaped from enclosures more or less recently, because we have no natural population in Lot-et-Garonne, explains Michel Auroux, president of the Departmental Hunting Federation. There are several farms listed in the four corners of the department, for venison or for pleasure. It is found in some butchers or delicatessens, it is a very tasty and tasty meat, between venison and doe, consumed especially during the holidays. »

“There is already a small population of fallow deer settled in the Mézinais, Casteljaloux or Fargues, others in the north of the department, small families that are being created, including recently in the Confluent. And it is an animal for which the Hunting Federation does not pay for the damage, unlike deer, roe deer or wild boar, continues Michel Auroux. In Armagnac, they eat the vine leaves in the spring, when the buds are tender and full of protein, they can also damage young trees by rubbing the velvet against the bark, and damage crops…”

On the Confluence, a dozen fallow deer have been seen together on a regular basis, and they breed fairly quickly. “There may be small herds of more than 30 or 40 animals. The problem is that we have few dogs created on the fallow deer, that is to say that can particularly follow this animal, cunning and difficult to hunt. »
