Ryzen 7 7840U. Behind this austere nomenclature, a new mobile processor that should allow AMD to pass an additional milestone in terms of performance and energy efficiency on ultraportable pc. Announced today, this new chip is indeed designed to compete with the Apple M2… but also with the best mobile CPUs from Intel.

Positioned on the top of the renewed range of AMDin terms of low-power chips, the new Ryzen 7 7840U is equipped with 8 cores and 16 threads clocked between 3.3 and 5.1 GHz, for 24 MB of cache and 15 to 30 W of TDP depending on what laptop manufacturers will agree to grant it. According to AMD, this new processor has enough muscle to tackle both the Apple M2 and the Intel Core i7-1360P in the performance field.

Impressive performance…according to AMD

Failing to provide really precise data, AMD provides for the moment comparative tables which allow us to have a first idea of the power developed by its 7840U. The processor would thus manage to beat the M2 chip of an Apple MacBook Air quite easily in the application field, with a performance difference of more than 70% on the multi-processing and PassMark 10 in favor of AMD. Intel and its Core i7-1360P are, for their part, exceeded in application as well as in graphics performance… and this thanks to the Radeon 780M GPU part integrated by the Ryzen 7 7840U.

From one generation to another, AMD also evokes a good progression, with up to 24% more application performance compared to the old Ryzen 7 6850H, launched last year. Still according to the brand, this new chip offers enough energy efficiency to tarnish at the top of the table and thus allow ” exceptional autonomy on the laptops that will be equipped with it. At this point, and as noted The VergeAMD does not, however, provide any precise data.

What about energy efficiency?

Faced with an Apple M2 (ARM) chip, the great champion in this field, AMD has every interest in quickly showing what it is capable of to confirm its statements. The firm nevertheless assures that it will be able to give precise estimates concerning the autonomy of laptops equipped with the Ryzen 7 7840U very soon, at the same time as the number of FPS obtained in game by the iGPU of its processor.

AMD also promises a wide distribution of this new APU, and its little comrades (notably at Framework, Razer, Acer, HP or even Lenovo). As specified The Vergethere will also be Ryzen 9, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3, equipped differently GPU-wise, with the 12-core Radeon 780M, eight-core Radeon 760M and quad-core Radeon 740M.

Logically, the AMD Z1 (found on board the ROG Ally) is also a modified version of the Ryzen 5 7540U, with iGPU Radeon 740M.
