Louis Bodin: why he is “optimistic” despite climate change

Just before his holidays from August 6, the TF1 weather expert evokes without alarmism this summer marked by heat waves, drought and forest fires.

The summer got off to a strong start with temperature records. What is your analysis?

Louis Bodin: When we have extreme periods, we confuse a lot of things. We must not mix up global warming and special events such as the heat wave. Moreover, over time, we are well below 2003! And I play the devil’s advocate: we broke cold records in Brazil! The real issue is climate change.

What changes should be made to slow it down?

With the war in Ukraine, we are worried about the shortage of gas and that already puts us in a position to look at how to consume less energy. The consumption that we make with heating, electricity or air conditioning, we can reduce it without harming our quality of life. We quickly arrive at 15 or 20% energy savings, it’s a huge gain.

Will the drought favor the multiplication of fires, as the Gironde has just suffered?

I’m going to be a bit provocative, but fires in France are half as numerous today as they were twenty years ago. At the time, it was monstrous and we didn’t know how to stop them. We talk about it more because people mix things up.

The impact on the environment and wildlife is enormous…

Sure, but if we’re not too invasive, nature will take over much faster than we think. Fortunately, all the species have not disappeared, they will quickly reconquer the territories if they are given space.

Emmanuel Macron announced a major national project with the ONF (National Forestry Office) for reforestation. A reaction ?

It’s awesome ! We have a territory completely adapted to that, there is such climatic diversity in France. Provided that we go to the end of the project because we need a real follow-up with better management of the forest, the diversity of cultures, a more intelligent relationship with our environment. We will get there, I am deeply optimistic.
