Louise Fletcher is dead. The Oscar winner died at the age of 88. She became famous for her role in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.

Oscar winner Louise Fletcher has died at the age of 88. According to US media reports, this was announced by her agent late on Friday evening. Accordingly, she died in her sleep surrounded by her family in her house in the southern French municipality of Montdurausse. Fletcher is best known for her role as Nurse Ratched alongside Jack Nicholson (85) in the cult film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.

The film, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Ken Kesey (1935-2001), won all five main awards at the 1976 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Nicholson) and Best Actress (Fletcher). She was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the series “Picket Fences.” Fletcher was last seen in the 2013 feature film “A Perfect Man” with Liev Schreiber (54) and Jeanne Tripplehorn (59).

Her role in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was so memorable that around 45 years later the Netflix streaming service released the “Ratched” series in 2020. In the spin-off with Sarah Paulson (47) as a nurse, the history of the former Fletcher role is told. So far, eight episodes of the first season have aired, but a second season has already been announced.

Louise Fletcher leaves behind two children

Fletcher was married to influential producer Jerry Bick (1923-2004) from 1960 to 1978 and they have two sons, John Dashiell Bick and Andrew Wilson Bick. After her divorce, she made headlines, especially in her native USA, with her relationship with the 25-year-old son of actor James Mason (1909-1984), Morgan Mason (67).
