Louvre opens: Five international museums that will soon be open again

The Louvre in Paris opens on Monday: these five international art museums are already or shortly granting visitors access.

Life and culture have to go on somehow – even despite the corona pandemic. Today, Monday, July 6, 2020, the most visited art museum in the world will reopen in Paris. Some international museums are also planning to grant visitors access again soon or are already open – a small selection.

Mona Lisa only with a protective mask

From Monday, Leonardo da Vinci's (1452-1519) portrait of the Mona Lisa and other world-famous works of art can be viewed again in the Louvre in Paris. However, due to the ongoing Corona crisis, strict security requirements apply for a visit. In order to gain access to the Louvre, which is open again every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., visitors must first reserve a time slot online.

Employees and visitors from the age of 11 must wear protective masks in the museum and use the disinfectant provided before entering. Guests have to provide masks themselves. The public must adhere to the relevant social distancing rules within the premises. In addition, not all exhibits will be accessible and the cloakroom will remain closed. That is why it is not allowed to bring motorcycle helmets, suitcases and large bags.

Since June 1, art lovers can also visit the Vatican Museums in the area of the Vatican City in Rome. The exhibition rooms are open from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays are the opening hours from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The halls are closed on Sundays and on August 14th and 15th. Here too, prior registration and adherence to a previously scheduled time is a prerequisite for admission. There is also a requirement for masks and other requirements, including a body temperature check, which can be viewed on the official website.

Consider Dürer from a distance

The Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain, is also open all week again – Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to a collection of the works of great Spanish painters, there are also creations by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) or Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). When visiting, it is important to observe the same requirements as for the other museums, including booking a ticket in advance, compulsory clearance and wearing a mask without a valve.

The Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London will reopen to visitors on July 27th. Interested parties can again get information online about the conditions that apply here. However, groups will not be allowed to look at Andy Warhol's (1928-1987) work. Among other things, the museum has set up routes that should function like one-way streets so that as few art lovers as possible meet.

MoMA in New York plans to reopen in August

The reopening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is currently scheduled for August 29, however detailed guidelines for a possible visit have not yet been published. However, according to the fashion magazine "Vogue", art historian and museum director Daniel H. Weiss (63) has already stated in a statement that "the safety of our workforce and visitors is our greatest concern".

Since it is currently often difficult to visit most of the major art museums again, many of the museums also offer online alternatives for lovers who want to be on the safe side. Many museums offer more detailed information on digital exhibitions and the like on their respective websites.
