LR presidency: the election postponed to December

Lhe Republicans have postponed the election of their next president to early December, instead of late November, in the absence of a “natural candidate” after Laurent Wauquiez gave up seeking the succession of Christian Jacob. The first round of the election will take place electronically from December 3 at 6 p.m. to December 4 at 6 p.m. Potential candidates have until October 3 at 6 p.m. to file the required sponsorships with the High Authority of the movement, which will publish the list of contenders on October 18.

If no candidate obtains the majority of the votes cast, a second round will be organized on 10 and 11 December. For her part, Annie Genevard assumes the interim presidency of the party. Referring to the many “parliamentary coordination work” and the “general political context”, she insisted on the fact that “for the first time, the presidency of the party is not sought by possible candidates for the presidential election”. This prompted the party to review its electoral calendar. “For the refoundation (of the party) and all the work we have left to do, we are not nearly two weeks away! “joked the LR vice-president of the Île-de-France region Othman Nasrou.

The names of the suitors circulate

The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region Laurent Wauquiez, the only prospective candidate, and favorite of Christian Jacob – who left office on July 1 – announced on Sunday that he was giving up running for the presidency. Just like Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de-France region, or Julien Aubert beaten in the legislative elections. Annie Genevard does not rule out being a candidate but has not made a decision. Among the other names circulating are those of the deputies Aurélien Pradié and Éric Ciotti, the former minister and mayor of the 7th arrondissement of Paris Rachida Dati, or the mayor of Cannes and president of the Association of mayors of France, David Lisnard .
