Stéphane Claireaux (LREM) was the target of projectiles – algae then stones – in front of his home. The government has decided to protect the elected official, who will lodge a complaint, and strongly condemned this violence.

The President of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand will meet Tuesday evening the Ministers of the Interior and of Justice, Gérald Darmanin and Eric Dupond-Moretti, to take stock of the violence against the deputies against the backdrop of an upsurge in these acts. The announcement of this meeting dates from the end of December but the agenda seems to be accelerating due to the aggression of the LREM deputy of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon targeted in front of his home on the sidelines of a demonstration against the pass vaccine.

The Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin, denounced Sunday evening a “attack” against his deputy, Stéphane Claireaux, occurred in front of the latter’s home in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, where the elected official received numerous projectiles in the face followed by stone throws.

The Minister of Overseas, Sébastien Lecornu, for his part announced that the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin and himself had “Instructed the prefect of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to ensure the protection of the deputy”.

In its statement, the Ministry of the Sea described the attack as follows: “On the sidelines of a citizen demonstration against the health pass, several dozen demonstrators went to the home of deputy Stéphane Claireaux. In a spirit of dialogue, he went to his steps where he received many projectiles violently thrown in the face followed by throwing stones ”.

Stéphane Claireaux announced Monday his intention to file a complaint. The attack he was the target of “Looked like stoning”, he told France Info. “I’m going to file a complaint, that’s obvious. Some may think that the wrong decisions are made. We all receive death threats by email, at some point it has to stop ”, said Stéphane Claireaux.

The deputy said he was waiting for the protesters, who were to pass “In front of (his) home”, “In order to be able to discuss with them”.There was a car that was loaded with seaweed, seaweed (set of seaweed), and people started throwing me at me. It looked like stoning. My wife came to join me on the front steps of the house. I avoided to 5 centimeters a pebble which passed close to the face ”, he continued.

“By directly attacking an elected representative of the Republic, at his home and in front of his own family, these demonstrators crossed the red line”, commented the Minister. “I give my full support to Stéphane Claireaux, my deputy, who is attacked at his home because he defends the health pass in a territory where 90% of the inhabitants are vaccinated”, she assured.

In a tweet, Mr. Lecornu for his part declared his “Full support for the deputy”, which he described as “An elected representative of the Republic lynched in front of his family home”. “No debate can justify this outburst”, he wrote.

The President of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, said he called Stéphane Claireaux: “I assured him of my personal support and of the solidarity of the National Assembly in the face of the intolerable aggression he suffered at his home when he proposed the dialogue”, he wrote on his Twitter account.

Attacks and death threats have increased in recent weeks, mainly against members of the majority who approved this week, at first reading, the bill transforming the health pass into a vaccination pass. Several of them published on social networks the death threats they received and announced their intention to file a complaint.

Update at 12 noon with the announcement of a ministerial meeting on violence against elected officials.
