By up to 200 euros: Lufthansa is drastically increasing flight prices – how to save for the summer

Flying is becoming more expensive due to rising energy and fuel prices. Lufthansa has passed on the increased kerosene procurement costs to those on the fly and has tightened the price screw. FOCUS Online says which flights are more expensive and how you can save now.

Anyone booking a flight in the next few days will have to dig deeper into their pockets. As FOCUS Online learned from industry circles, Lufthansa, for example, is increasing the prices for several holiday countries. In some cases, passengers have to pay up to 200 euros for a return flight.

Lufthansa increases prices: Which flight routes are affected?

According to information from our editorial team, return flights to Africa, South America, Asia, Australia, the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Middle East each cost 30 euros in Economy Class, 50 euros in Premium Eco, and in Business -Class 100 euros and in first class even up to 200 euros more.

There is one exception: For flight connections to North and Central America, the price increase in first class is only 100 euros.

Apparently no special offers are affected by the price increase. The price increases also apply to sister and subsidiary companies of the airline. These include, for example, for Swiss Air, Eurowings Discover or Austrian Airlines.

Lufthansa had also increased tariffs within the EU – and is not alone in this. European airlines had also turned up the price screw for flights. Here it was sometimes up to 30 euros per flight connection in the air.

Do the prices also increase for summer holidays?

It is possible that prices will continue to rise. Travel companies had already indicated that travelers should expect higher prices for rental cars, hotels and flights this summer. The increased energy and fuel prices hit all of Europe.

The development on the crude oil market is dynamic. At the pumps, diesel recently cost over 2.30 euros per liter. The federal government reacted and now wants to relieve affected drivers with a package of measures.

But not only flights are becoming more expensive.

There are massive bottlenecks in the delivery of spare parts for rental cars. At the same time, car production is faltering because of the Ukraine war.

Hotels have to recalculate for the summer season. Higher electricity, energy and personnel costs are causing hotel prices to rise sharply. At the same time, the 2021 summer season was difficult for many hotel owners because the sharp drop in sales from the previous year and the first half of 2021 put pressure on operators and revenues fell short of expectations.

The travel industry believes that there will be a cleanup by summer 2022 at the latest. How many hotels will survive remains to be seen.

How can I save on vacation?

It is helpful to start thinking about your summer vacation from now on. In individual cases, high flight and hotel costs can be avoided. Depending on the destination, duration and hotel, travelers will have to reckon with additional costs of around 200 euros per person for a package holiday this summer.

The longer the holiday lasts, the higher the price. It is possible that Turkey and Egypt in particular will again be waiting with decent bargains.

Travel experts also warn: If you want to rent a small car in July or August, you should try to get a cheap offer by April at the latest.

Is it worth taking out travel cancellation insurance?

Travel cancellation insurance applies, for example, in the event of illness, accident, unemployment or the death of a close relative.

So personal risks are covered. However, the insurance does not pay, for example, in the event of a travel warning or if a lockdown is imposed again at the holiday destination.

What proof do I need on vacation?

The member states of the European Union had spoken out in favor of simplified entry and exit within the EU.

Those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered need their proof for the holiday. In paper form or digitally.

CovPass apps for Android & iOS are available here:

A planned and simplified check-in procedure at the airport will make the immigration form obsolete (read more about it here). The digital vaccination certificate remains in place for this. The same applies to proof of recovery and tests.

The entry form has so far been abolished for Greece, Austria, Germany, Cyprus (from April 1st), Italy (from March 31st), Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Malta and Slovenia have not yet announced that their entry registration will be abolished. However, an end is expected soon.
