Lugano catches up a 0:2 – Turbulent match in Geneva ends with a 2:2 – sport

  • In the 14th round of the Super League, Servette and Lugano parted ways with a 2:2.
  • Servette handed over a 2-1 break lead when outnumbered.
  • The game takes a decisive turn in the 44th minute.
  • In the other Saturday game, Lucerne wins 3-1 at GC.

As Servette was heading for a 2-0 lead at the break, something decisive happened in the Geneva penalty area: after a corner kick by Renato Steffen, Zan Celar headed the ball into the net to make it 1-2. The striker was hit in the head by Steve Rouiller and had to be carried off the field, bleeding profusely. Referee Lukas Fähndrich showed the Servette defender yellow. But the referee looked at the scene again on the screen after a VAR intervention – and dismissed Rouiller (44th).

Certainly a controversial decision, as Celar had his head very low in this action. And Rouiller could not be accused of intention either.

After this dismissal, the balance of power obviously changed in the second half. Lugano dominated the game with a majority and had good chances to equalize. Nevertheless, it took until the 82nd minute before the score was 2:2. Ousmane Doumbia played the ball into the center from an impossible angle, Servette goalie Jérémy Frick deflected the ball minimally – but decisively – into the goal.

A few minutes later, Lugano’s Milton Valenzuela saw a second yellow card after another foul on Miroslav Stevanovic, leaving both sides with ten men.

Lots of action before the break

The entertaining and attractive game at the Stade de Genève started with a bang. After two missed top chances by Dereck Kutesa in the 2nd minute, it was Rouiller who headed his colors into the lead after 132 seconds. Stevanovic also raised a free-standing header in the 26th minute.

But Lugano was by no means without a chance before the break. But on the contrary. The ball hit the post no less than 4 times. Seen in this way, the 1:2 before the change of sides was well deserved.

Servette’s negative series against Lugano continues

After the draw, it remains the same: Lugano is Servette’s feared opponent. The “Grenat” could only win one of the last 14 direct duels. In the now seven Super League home games against the Ticino, they never left the pitch as a winner. Due to the 2:2, Servette could not put any pressure on leader YB, the Geiger team is four points behind in second place. Lugano remains in eighth place.

The next games of the two teams

On November 6, Servette welcomes leaders Young Boys to the top game at the Stade de Genève. Lugano is up against an opponent of a different caliber: The Ticino host FC Zurich at the bottom of the Super League in the Cornaredo.
