Luke Skywalker to do the Joker? How Mark Hamill got the role of the famous Batman villain

Mark Hamill isn’t just Luke Skywalker. It is also the voice of the Joker in films and animated series devoted to Batman. A work of more than 20 years, of which he has just told the genesis in an interview with the site Movieweb.

Mark Hamill began lending his voice to the Joker character 31 years ago with Batman: The Animated Series, continuing with Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Justice League, and Static Shock. He had also provided dubbing on the excellent animated film Batman against the masked ghost and Batman, the next generation: The Return of the Joker.

Without forgetting to also lend his voice to the character in the video games. In 2011, Mark Hamill announced on his Twitter account that he was done with the prince of crime: “Hello / Goodbye Joker! I enjoyed every minute spent in the company of this character, who I will miss very much” he wrote.

Still, this announcement was only a half surprise. Because the actor had already announced, during an interview with the IGN site in May 2011, that his participation in dubbing the Joker for the game Batman: Arkham City would be his last performance.

Below, a small preview of his extraordinary work on the game…

The actor has still put a little knife in the contract, since he will lend his voice to the animated film The Killing Joke, released in 2016. This story comes from a comic book by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, which presents a kind origin story of the Joker as well as a new confrontation between the Dark Knight and his worst enemy. It also sees Commissioner Gordon’s daughter suffer a sad fate that will have repercussions for the DC Comics Universe as a whole.

“Do you think they’ll hire Luke Skywalker?”

That being said, how did Mark Hamill come to put his voice on the Joker? The actor explained to the site Moviwebconfident that he absolutely did not think he would be retained.

When I applied [pour le rĂ´le du Joker], I thought, ‘Do you think they’re going to hire Luke Skywalker to play the Joker? The fans are going to lose their minds! I was so sure I couldn’t be cast. got role anxiety, because you want it. Here, I knew I couldn’t get the part, so who cared?

I drove out of the parking lot thinking, “That’s the best Joker they’ll ever hear, and it’s too bad they can’t cast me.” But as soon as they restrained me, it reversed. I was like “Oh no, I can’t do this!” Hamill therefore posed his voice on the animated series Batman broadcast on the Fox Kids channel between 1992 and 1995.

Warner Bros.

And to indicate that he was also greatly inspired by the courage of Michael Keaton who had been selected to play Batman. At the time, fans of the DC superhero, very (very) upset by this choice of Warner, had flooded the mailbox of the studio with petitions and other threats. “They hadn’t even seen him in the role yet and didn’t know how great he would become. But there was all this controversy around him.” Hamill comments.

Either way, Hamill was right to stick with it: his vocal performance as Batman’s arch-nemesis is nothing short of extraordinary.
