With its ultra-wide display, this screen offers 4K definition and can accommodate several video sources. This makes Lukos a very atypical screen.
External displays are not a very popular product segment. Even if the use exists, this product has not necessarily found a very large audience. We call them portable screens (we even have a dedicated selection), this is well suited to people who want a mobile office or who don’t have the space to accommodate a classic PC monitor.
With the massive arrival of USB-C good at everything, portable screens are much more practical to use: this USB-C transmits video data and powers the external screen on the way. These screens are, unfortunately, often limited in performance: low definition, limited brightness… with a few exceptions.
Lukos, an atypical format, but good characteristics (on paper)
Here is the Lukos screen, whose fundraising campaign has started. This 14-inch IPS display offers native 4K resolution (3840 × 1100 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 32:9, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, up to 300 nits of brightness, a 100% sRGB panel and a response time of 2 ms. Even better: multiple devices can be connected at once and used in two or four multi-view modes.
Its connectivity is very complete with a DisplayPort 1.2 port, two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, two HDMI 2.0b ports and an HDMI 1.4 port. There’s a USB Type-C connector and 12V power input, while a built-in fan keeps the screen cool under heavy use. A priori, this is certainly due to its ability to manage multiple video inputs.
What we appreciate is its format: it can easily be housed under a PC screen to make it an advanced Stream Deck, display commands for your favorite software… like the Asus “Duo” laptops which have a screen above the keyboard. As part of mobility use, it takes up little space in a bag.
For $419 excluding VAT during the Kickstarter campaign, that’s a hefty price tag. This did not prevent the achievement of the first stages. However, this does not guarantee that the project will reach the final stage of its development and that you will be delivered on time.
Our advice is to monitor the progress of the project, so you can buy (without risk) a final edition of the product if you find a specific need.
