Lula hopes to travel to Washington before taking office

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Friday he plans to travel to the United States and meet with U.S. President Joe Biden after his presidential victory was officially confirmed on December 12. presidential election at the expense of Jair Bolsonaro.

“I want to talk to him about relations between Brazil and the United States, the geopolitical role of Brazil in the world, the war in Ukraine, we don’t need war,” he said.

In Washington, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that Joe Biden’s administration was preparing to welcome Lula for a visit “at the appropriate time”. Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, will travel to Brazil on Monday for talks.

Lula is due to take over the presidency on January 1.
