Lumix GH6: Panasonic brings direct recording to SSD

There’s no doubt that the Panasonic Lumix GH6 is more of a video camera than a still camera. Although this hybrid is able to produce very convincing shots, it is simply better as a camera. It can shoot up to 5.7K and 4:2:2 10-bit internally and in ProRes, as well as Raw externally. You can count on many options to facilitate video capture, including taking anamorphic sequences. And that’s without counting on refined ergonomics for videographers.

Finally saving to SSD

At the end of spring 2022, an update brought Raw capture via an HDMI adapter or even ProRes in 4:2:2 HQ internally. But an option promised at launch was still missing: direct recording of sequences on an SSD via the USB-C port. A rare option, even unprecedented on a photo box, which considerably extends its storage space.

No SSD over 2TB

Thus, from September 27, 2022, owners of Panasonic Lumix GH6 will be able, after downloading the 2.2 update, to record sequences in Apple ProRes 4:2:2 HQ (1.9 Gbps maximum) or larger All-Intra 4:2:2 10-bit bitrate files. Be careful though, the capacity of the “disks” cannot exceed 2 TB. Panasonic also warns that sequences exceeding 60 fps cannot be saved directly on SSD.

The update can be downloaded for free from September 27, 2022 on the manufacturer’s website by following this link.
