Almost a year ago, Dell unveiled its Concept Luna. The stated objective was simple: transform the laptop PC at an engineering and industrial level to make it modular, easier to recycle, and thus reduce the amount of electronic waste at the end of the chain (more than 50 million tons each year, ‘after Dell), thanks to a system of reuse of parts and components that are still valid. Today, the manufacturer of Round Rock returns to the charge by announcing that it has refined its concept.
One ambition: reduce waste
At the center of Dell’s project, the idea of offering several lives to the main components of a laptop PC… and making them easier to access in order to simplify their reuse process. The firm explains this year that it has optimized its manufacturing processes to eliminate the need for adhesives and cables, and minimize the use of screws. The Concept Luna is refined and the prospects for recycling multiplied, assures Dell, which however suggests that this effort is still in progress and that new improvements are still possible. Ultimately, the objective would be to recycle and integrate into new generation devices materials and components from old products, in order to achieve a large-scale circular economy, and drastically reduce the need for materials. raw.
To achieve this ideal, Dell is counting on a sustainable design right from the R&D phase, on a good layer of robotic automation in future recycling centers (the products resulting from the Concept Luna should moreover be completely dismountable in a few minutes, even less, using robots, compared to more than an hour for current devices), but also on the analysis of telemetric data.
