Omar Sy has won the hearts of streaming fans as Assane Diop in “Lupine”. The Frenchman celebrated his breakthrough back in 2011.

The master thief “Lupine” returns: Assane Diop’s campaign of revenge against Hubert Pelligrini continues on June 11 with the second part of the French Netflix series. “Now he is forced to come up with a new plan to defeat Pellegrini. Even if that means putting himself in danger,” the announcement said. Omar Sy (43) is the star of the series as Assane Diop.

Acting wasn’t his professional goal

The son of a Senegalese father and a Mauritanian mother was born in 1978 in Trappes, a suburb of Paris. Sy originally wanted to work as an engineer for heating, ventilation and sanitary technology and to emigrate to his father’s homeland. Between 1996 and 1997, however, he worked for a French radio station, where he met his friend Fred Testot (44). From 2005 they were seen together on the TV show “Omar et Fred”. With the sketch show, Sy made a name for himself as a comedian. Two directors noticed him and offered him his first major film role.

Film role gives him a breakthrough

In the tragic comedy “Pretty Best Friends” by Olivier Nakache (48) and Éric Toledano (49), wealthy Philippe (François Cluzet, 65), who has been paralyzed from the third cervical vertebra downwards since a paragliding accident, is looking for a new caregiver Driss (Sy) who has just served six months in prison for a robbery. After initial difficulties, a special friendship develops between the two. Not only was the film named the most successful domestic production of the year in 2011 and Sy won a César for best leading actor, the French work was also an international success.

Jump to Hollywood

Sy, who has been married to the mother of his four children since 2007, strived for more. The family moved to Los Angeles in 2012 and the Frenchman landed roles in the blockbuster “X-Men: Future is Past” (2014), in the sequel “X-Men: First Decision” and in “Jurassic World” (2015). With “Today I’m Samba” (2014), “Suddenly Papa” (2016) and “Monsieur Chocolat” (2016), he also stayed true to French film. In 2021 he should then achieve great streaming success: The first five episodes of “Lupine” have been available on Netflix since January 8, 2021 and became a surprise hit.

“Lupine Part II”: That’s what it’s about

The series is based on the adventures of the master thief Arsène Lupine. Assane Diop emulates the literary figure from a detective novel and becomes a master thief himself. “Lupine Part 2” consists of five new episodes, the cast remains the same as in the first season with Omar Sy, Hervé Pierre (66), Nicole Garcia (75) or Clotilde Hesme (41). An official trailer already exist. It shows that Pelligrini kidnapped Assane Diop’s son. “Now he’s gone too far,” said the “most wanted man in France”.
