LVMH Word Hennessy Louis Vuitton: Selective distribution January 13, 2022 Immersive installation by artist Mehmet Ali Uysal at Bon March to raise awareness of climate issues

Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche has given carte blanche to the artist Mehmet Ali Uysal to celebrate the white month initiated in 1872 by Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut, founders of the department store. His work Su – meaning “water” in Turkish – blends natural and cultural elements in an artistic reflection on water and its vital and destructive power. The immersive installationwill be presented until February 20.

The installation takes the form of two icebergs installed on either side of the emblematic escalator designed by Andrée Putman. These suspended works of ice culminate from the glass roof, representing sea level, to above the heads of visitors. A symbol of melting ice, water with turquoise reflections then spreads through the windows of the department store thanks to a skilful play of light.

The reflection continues on the second floor with a large white boat 17 meters long and 8 meters wide whose shape evokes origami folding. Echoing Noah’s Ark, this installation symbolizes the hope of the world of tomorrow, saved from the rising waters.

Two tours of the installation have been specially designed for children with the presence of the artist and a storyteller.

The exhibition is accompanied by a collaboration with Benjamin Dutreux. A Vendée Globe sailor, he is also an ambassador for the Water Family, an association that raises children’s awareness of water protection. The artist and the navigator will discuss climate change and their fascination with water. They will also offer a catalog through which micro-donations for the association will be collected.

Mehmet Ali Uysal is famous for his creations which question our perception of space. Playing with games of scale, he defies the laws of nature to give places unexpected perspectives. Among his most renowned installations are skin, a huge clothespin installed in 2010 for the Vent des forêt festival in the Chaudfontaine park in Belgium or even human calves engulfed in white puddles for the exhibition “Ne m’abandonne pas” at the Paris-Beijing Gallery in 2020.

Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche invites a contemporary artist every year to create an artistic journey designed especially for the department store. The exhibition Su follows on from Er – xi – Playground by Ai Weiwei (2016), Where are we going? by Chiharu Shiota (2017), Under the sky by Leandro Erlich (2018), Branco-Luz by Joana Vasconcelos (2019), ame nochi hana by Oki Sato and The Erogenous Amazon by Prune Nourry (2021). Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is delighted to welcome the work of Mehmet Ali Uysal, whose work draws the outlines of a more engaged future.
